Building capacity and connections: Iron Ore Hub visits Japan & China

31-Mar-2017

Earlier this year researchers from the ARC Iron Ore Hub together with industrial partners visited Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation in Japan. The visit was an opportunity to present recent research findings on fundamental drivers of sinter quality and optimisation techniques for lump iron ores in the blast furnace. This work is aimed at assisting iron-makers with efficient and cost effective operations. The group later visited Tohoku University Sendai Japan to discuss areas of potential collaboration in iron and steelmaking.  Tohoku University’s reputation for numerical modelling of ironmaking processes is beneficial to research currently underway at the Hub. The team met with Professor Kasai a former colleague who in the 1980’s spent time at the BHP Research Centre in Newcastle (now the NIER precinct).

In March, Hub researchers and industrial partners met with Baosteel in Shanghai to further present their research findings in sinter quality and lump utilisation. High quality sinter has been shown to improve the fuel efficiency of blast furnace operations. The Iron Ore Hub’s research in understanding the properties of iron ores and the influence of these on sinter quality is of interest to Baosteel. The visit was also an opportunity to discuss topics in iron and steel making.

During this visit the team also met with counterparts from Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China to advance the collaborative research program between the Iron Ore Hub and Zhejiang University.

Continuing a successful collaboration Zhejiang University and the ARC Iron Ore Hub

The collaboration between Zhejiang University and the University of Newcastle began in 2009 with the joint supervision of a PhD student. This student later returned to the University of Newcastle as a post-doctoral fellow.  Joint research into the iron ore sintering process has continued along with further PhD supervision and is an important aspect of the Iron Ore Hub’s activity.

The University of Newcastle will host another reciprocal visit from Zhejiang University where researchers will present a joint paper at the Iron Ore 2017 Conference.
