The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore held its Virtual Hub Showcase on 23 November 2020. University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Prof Alex Zelinsky hosted the event, joined by ARC CEO Prof Sue Thomas, Dr Ben Ellis representing Industry Partner BHP, Craig Wilson representing FLSmidth, and 70 audience members online. Hub Director A/Prof Honeyands and Chief Investigators outlined the Hub achievements over the last 5 years.
Iron Ore is Australia’s single largest value export, worth an estimated $100B in 2020, meaning this area of research is critical to Australia’s economy. This is the University of Newcastle’s first industrial Transformation Research Hub.
The Hub has carried out research across the iron ore value chain, from mineral processing to materials handling, through to utilisation in iron and steelmaking. This has been achieved in partnership with industry and through strong relationships with BHP, FLSmidth, Sedgman and Nagrom.
The Hub has trained nine PhD students, 10 Research Associates and numerous honours students, many of whom now work in industry and contribute to the furthering of innovation in the sector.
While this marks the end of funding for this research hub, outcomes will underpin future research and innovation, including advances in areas such as the production of green steel, dust management and environmental compliance.
