Iron Ore Conference 2019, Perth Visit Report

Tom Honeyands, Xinliang Liu, Tobin Harvey, Tejbir Singh (The University of Newcastle)

The AusIMM Iron Ore conference 2019 with theme of “Optimising Value” was held in Perth from 22nd to 24th July 2019. There were 9 different sessions focusing on the research work in field of geology and geo-statistics, processing, mining, characterisation and geo-metallurgy, agglomeration, automation, new equipment, downstream processing and health, safety, environment and community. Total of 650 delegates attended the conference from around the globe e.g., Australia (Host), Japan, South Africa, India, China, Europe, South Korea, Brazil etc. Delegates from research units and universities like CSIRO, Tohoku University, University of Newcastle, University of Wollongong, Central South University China and many other presented their work along with the mining and ironmaking industries like BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG, Nippon Steel Ltd, JFE, ArcelorMIttal, Tata Steel, SCantech etc.

ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore (Iron Ore Hub) was one of the sponsors in the conference and for session 4B: Agglomeration, with A/Prof Tom Honeyands as chairperson of the session.

There were four presentation from the iron ore hub:

Influence of slimes on gravity separation of iron ore fines in a REFLUXTM classifier (Kevin Galvin, University Of Newcastle, NIER)

Comparison of the mineralogy of iron ore sinters using a range of techniques (A/Prof Tom Honeyands, University Of Newcastle, NIER)

Chemical interaction between basic sinter and Newman blend lump analogues (Dr Xinliang Liu, University Of Newcastle Australia, NIER)

Influence of sintering conditions on the reducibility of iron ore sinter analogues Tobin Harvey, University Of Newcastle Australia, NIER)

Measured and modelled air flow rates during the iron ore sintering process: green and sintered beds (Tejbir Singh, University Of Newcastle Australia, NIER)

The conference was a great occasion to meet and share the research work in ironmaking. We meet representative of universities and industries which will build the links and possible future collaboration in ironmaking research.
