A/Prof Tom Honeyands from the University of Newcastle Iron Ore Hub, along with Partner Investigators from BHP visited a number of the World’s leading iron and steelmakers in China late last year. Outcomes of Hub research were presented and laboratory techniques for evaluating iron ores for ironmaking were compared, during visits to BaoSteel, Zenith Steel and Shougang Steel Research Laboratories.
Research results were also presented and future trends in ironmaking in China were discussed with different research groups at the University of Science and Technology Beijing; Prof Wu, Prof Zhang, and the State Key Lab of Advance Metallurgy. A current collaborative effort has been initiated with Prof Zhang’s team, who are supplying samples from quenched blast furnaces in China to the Iron Ore Hub for Synchrotron and neutron CT analysis.
A/Prof Honeyands was invited to attend and present a paper at the “Innovation of Ironmaking Technologies and Future International Collaboration” Conference in Tokyo, organised by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
