Building International Connections – Iron Ore Hub Visits to Japan and Taiwan in August 2018

A/Prof Tom Honeyands from the University of Newcastle Iron Ore Hub, along with Partner Investigators from BHP visited a number of the World’s leading iron and steelmakers in Japan and Taiwan this Month. A/Prof Honeyands presented the outcomes of Hub research in the sintering and ironmaking area and discussed the utilisation of Australian iron ore in ironmaking along with current trends in iron and steelmaking. Visits were made to Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metals Corporation (NSSMC), JFE Steel and Kobe Steel in Japan, China Steel and Dragon Steel in Taiwan. A visit was also made to Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, to discuss potential collaborative R&D projects.

The meeting in Taiwan marked the 30th anniversary of the BHP – CSC technical collaboration. CSC are keen to continue this collaboration, and it was agreed in principle that a CSC researcher would visit the University of Newcastle for a 6 month secondment to work on collaborative sintering research.

The ARC Research Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore held its Virtual Hub Showcase on 23 November 2020. University of Newcastle Vice- Chancellor Prof Alex Zelinsky hosted the event.
